Every day is an adventure in the Congo. We just try to remember that Rule #1 is always in place and do what we can.
So, at 6am today, we had plans to take President and Sister Headlee to the airport after their six-day visit. When we flung open the barrier to leave, this is what we found.
Upon closer examination we saw that the left front wheel had come off the car that was now parked directly in front of our driveway. It's not uncommon to see cars and trucks with wheels off and people working on them along the side of every road , but nobody was even working on this one. It's also common for people to abandon cars like this for weeks or months. We're pretty nervous about our future departures.
We had to get the Headlees to the airport and it's not like you can call a taxi or call a friend here to help you out at 6am. So, what to do? What to do?
I've seen Brent do some fancy driving and parking in our days together. One time in Hawaii he did the most remarkable job of getting us in and out of the hotel parking.
So, he just went for it!! I'm so sad that I hadn't brought my camera and had not time to go inside and get it. I believe that this was his crowning moment in car maneuvering. He got us out and back in after the airport run, without taking out the hedge or either car.
We had to go out another time before they got it moved. So Brent tried it again.
He managed to get us out and back in again, but this time in the car with the steering wheel on the right. It's got a shorter wheel base, but I think the crazy steering difference would have been more of a problem for me.
Very impressive driving!
